Education Outside of the Classroom

At all Year levels, boys can become involved in activities outside the classroom that help them to grow and become Marist Men. These include:

Year 7 Camp

This is one of the highlights of the Intermediate school years. Taking place in Week 6,  Term 1, the students are split into 3 groups and travel to the YMCA Shakespear Lodge in Whangaparoa, for a 2 day 1 night camp. They partake in various activities including, Coasteering, Coastguard Safe-boating, Kayaking, Climbing, Mountain Boarding and other activities.

Year 8 Camp

Early in Term 1, our Year 8 students are treated to a  3 day, 2-night camp at the YMCA Camp Adair in Hunua.  Established in 1913, The Y Camp Adair (formerly known as the YMCA) in Hunua has provided thousands of Kiwis the opportunity to develop themselves using the great outdoors. Overlooking the stunning Hunua Ranges Regional Park, YMCA Camp Adair covers 100 acres and includes four self-contained areas that can accommodate a total of 434 people.

Boys will be involved in a range of activities including: Tubing & River safety, High Ropes, Mudslide, Pioneering, Kayaking, and Archery.

Year 9 Camp

This  four day adventure held in Term 4 is a time when lasting friendships are formed and much fun is had. This is a long-standing tradition at Sacred Heart College, Year 9 boys, staff and parents come together at Lake Karapiro and participate in a wide range of activities on the land and in the water.

Year 12 PE Snow Camp

In Term 3, the Year 12 Physical Education students pack their bags and skis/snowboards and head off to Ohakune for the annual Year 12 Physical Education Snow Camp. Students look forward to the trip and, historically, it has been regarded as one of the highlights of a student’s time at Sacred Heart College. The students stay at the Auckland Grammar Ski Lodge in Ohakune and, for three days they ski and snowboard at Turoa. Attached to the trip are two Achievement Standards worth a total of six credits.

Cultural and Educational Overseas Trips

Most years, Sacred Heart College organises an overseas trip for Senior students. The aim of these trips is to give students firsthand experience in dealing with the different cultures and languages they have been learning about at school.

Students can gain a better understanding of other cultures and of different ways of behaving whilst exploring new countries. Trips also initiate a desire to look beneath the surface of things and understand the extent of human history. It is our hope that an educational trip enhances our students' understanding and awareness of different cultures, develops life skills such as managing self and relating to others, and widens students' appreciation of being members of the global village.
